Becoming a Leader

If you want respect, you must earn it. If you want to be noticed you must do something noteworthy. Be a student of yourself; know your strengths and capitalize on them. Know your weaknesses and work on them.

  • No matter what position you have, notice how leaders and those you respect look, act and think; this is your guide, notice what you notice.
  • Dress for the position you want, rather than for the one you have
  • Be proactive, never reactive
  • Ask for what you want
  • Be assertive, not aggressive
  • Be positive
  • Bring out the best in others; making others look good makes you look good in return
  • Let go of resistance; be open to change
  • Take initiative
  • Be a problem solver; never be the problem
  • Listen and observe
  • Don’t take things personally
  • Have a sense of humor along with a healthy dose of humility
